Top 3 Tips on Becoming an Empathetic PM
“Empathy in product management means being able to be a down-to-earth person to listen and observe and to learn and adapt to do action with compassion. Without empathy, you can’t build the product with the right solution.”
Three key activities of an empathetic PM:
Listen
Learn
Act
LISTEN
Understand your customers' needs and goals. The best PM’s are proactive about listening to their customers to understand what you are solving and what improvements you can make. Reach out and ask them questions. Bonus points if you can watch how they use your product!
LEARN
Jeff Bezos said, “Be stubborn on vision, be flexible on the details.” From you conversations, be reflective on what you learned from your customer. You can empathize with their needs, but remember your long-term game. You are the one responsible for sticking to your vision. You can’t take every suggestion from every customer.
ACT
After you’ve listened to and learned from your customers, it’s time to implement the feedback and insights. The quicker you can ship your updates, the quicker you can receive your feedback to start the cycle over again.
Actively engaging your customers helps them have a connection to your product. This will lead to them becoming brand ambassadors, which is what we all want. They now have even more reason to tell others how great your product is because your customer can take credit for specific updates based on their suggestions.
