In 2006, Julie Zhou became the first intern at Facebook.
After 14 years at Facebook, she ended her career there as VP of Product Design.
In this 2016 blog post, she recalls how her love for design, in part, started with a rare chartreuse-coloured Sony Walkman her grandfather gave her as a gift.
What made this device so magnificent is that it went beyond how a cassette player was supposed to look at the time. It exceeded expectations. It aimed to wow.
Product design should, at a minimum, meet the expectations of function. But, great product design delivers more than what’s expected.
It should deliver an experience and blow customers away.
